Some people might file many insurance claims when everything seems to happen all at once. In a single year, you might have different types of damage to your vehicle or home, and you might wonder if you should file insurance claims for all of them. Is there a limit to how many claims you can file in a year?
The law has no limitations on how many insurances claims you can file, and most policy agreements do not expressly restrict the number of claims either. However, there can be consequences to filing numerous claims within a short period of time. If you have a dispute with your insurance company, speak with an insurance claims attorney as soon as possible.
Possible Consequences of Many Insurance Claims in a Year
Sometimes, you have bad luck, and your property suffers damage repeatedly in the same year. If you have legitimate claims, you can file them, though there might be penalties after multiple filings. These might include:
- Losing any policy “no claim” bonuses
- Increased premium rates
- Having your policy renewal denied at the end of the year
If your policy is canceled, it might be challenging to find another policy with reasonable rates due to your recent claim history.
The Type of Claim Matters
If another driver hits you, and you report it to your auto insurance company, you should not be penalized for a no-fault claim. You should be able to file as many no-fault claims as needed within a year without suffering consequences.
At-fault claims, on the other hand, are a completely different story. Most insurance companies will not renew a policy after two at-fault claims within three years. You might have a policy with an accident forgiveness provision, which means your first claim will be ignored. However, if you need to file another claim within a year, you can face penalties.
Should You File Many Insurance Claims?
You might be hesitant to seek insurance coverage if you have already filed claims that year. Always carefully consider whether you should file a claim or not, given the specific circumstances. Some things to consider before filing include:
- Is the damage minor and something you can live with?
- Is the cost of repairs less than your deductible?
- Who was at fault?
- What are the terms of your specific policy regarding multiple claims?
You do not always have to file a claim for damage to your vehicle. If the repairs are not much higher than your deductible, it could save you money in the long run if you pay for the repairs out of pocket and avoid increased premiums or canceled policies.
