The Supreme Court grants this distinction only to those attorneys who are able to demonstrate sufficient levels of experience, education, knowledge, and skill in civil trial practice. Candidates must provide an extensive and detailed history of actual matters litigated before the Courts in New Jersey and tried to verdict. Prior to receiving attorney certification, candidates must also pass a rigorous written examination related to civil trial law and must demonstrate an unblemished reputation by submitting a list of attorneys and judges who will attest to their character and abilities as trial lawyers. Certification is granted to less than five percent (5%) percent of the attorneys admitted to practice law in the State of New Jersey. Why Does Certified Civil Trial Attorney Distinction Matter?

The Court grants this distinction only to those attorneys who are able to demonstrate sufficient levels of experience, education, knowledge, and skill in civil trial practice.  Candidates must provide an extensive and detailed history of actual matters litigated before the Courts in New Jersey, New York (Bronx and Queens), and tried to verdict.  Prior to receiving certification, candidates must also pass a rigorous written examination related to civil trial law in New Jersey and must demonstrate an unblemished reputation by submitting a list of attorneys and judges who will attest to their character and abilities as trial attorneys. Certification is granted to less than five (5) percent of the attorneys admitted to practice in the New Jersey Supreme Court.

Board certification means that certain lawyers can present themselves as “certified civil trial lawyers” in their practice areas. Available practice areas include civil trial law, workers’ compensation law, family law, municipal court law, and criminal law.

Qualifications for a Certified Trial Attorney

Only attorneys who meet the following qualifications can be eligible for this designation: U.S, Supreme Court Building

  • They are members in good standing of the New Jersey Bar for five years or longer.

  • They took the required amount of continuing legal education courses (CLEs) over the prior three years.

  • They have had substantial involvement in preparing cases for litigation.

  • They can demonstrate a clear name and reputation by having judges and attorneys stand up for their ability, skills, and character.

  • They pass a rigorous written exam that covers many aspects of their designated practice area.

  • They can show they have high levels of education, skill, knowledge, and experience in their designated practice area.

General Eligibility Requirements

An applicant must meet the requirements set forth herein to be eligible for admission to a certification examination in a designated area of practice.

Minimum Plenary Admission. Admission to the bar of the State of New Jersey for the purpose of meeting the requirements of this section commences from the date of an attorney’s plenary admission. An applicant must have been in good standing in all jurisdictions in which the applicant holds a bar license for at least the five years immediately preceding the filing of the application, and must so certify.

Ongoing Obligation. Each applicant has an ongoing responsibility to report to the Board Any malpractice actions brought, disciplinary complaints filed, fee arbitrations filed, or any discipline imposed on him or her during the pendency of the application. In addition, each applicant has an ongoing obligation to notify the Board during the pendency of the application process of any additional information that relates to the requirements for certification.

The practice of Law. Applicants for certification must be engaged in the private practice of law, wherein the applicant represents and gives legal advice to clients, maintains a bona fide office pursuant to Rule 1:21-1(a), and maintains the appropriate bank accounts pursuant to Rule 1:21-6; or employed by State, county or municipal government representing and giving legal advice to clients.
